The ice disappeared today, May 26th. Earlier today, (and all this week actually) the lake ice was all rotten & broken up into crystals. Huge mile long masses of these crystalline shards, pushed by even the slightest breeze, were moving back and forth across the lake causing patches of open water areas to be covered over again within just a few hours. Of course the feeding swans would have to move over to some other area that was uncovered. Some of these 'islands' of ice were even pushed up onto shore, forming wave-like shapes along the windward shoreline. Yesterday, the Craigens invited us over, to observe one in front of their place, saying "it was nearly 20 feet high, the crystal shards falling off the top curl of the thing making a interesting sound, just like crystals falling and breaking". (any excuse for "happy hour" right) However, when we went over a bit later, things had changed again and the long pile of ice had reduced itself to maybe ten feet high or so. Apparently all the falling crystals had settled.
Today was really nice & hot (18ยบ I think) so ya, tonight the ice is gone!
As always when it's really hot like this, the sky seems to get smoky. Sunset was golden.
